This is a genuine Black & Decker Spring for Workmates.
This is a metal extension spring which springs the levers on the side allowing the frame to collapse and fold out to be used. If this spring was broken or missing, it means the frame wouldn't be collapsible correctly, the frame could just pop open whilst you are transporting it.
