The terminal plate is the connection point / conduit between the battery and the tool itself. This particular black terminal plate is one of two newer terminal plates that are stamped with a star and have three connections. The star and third connection are for the newer wave of tools that have extra protections built in and can take up to 6amp batteries. The black terminal plate is designed for high drain tools, like angle grinders, SDS drills and vacuums. The other is yellow which is suited for tools that do not drain the batteries as quickly.

Please note, any tool with a Terminal Plate that has only two connections can use only 3amp batteries or below.
